memories 8 years today

BouquetFood memories

8 years ago I married my lovely hubstar in Fiji, today and perhaps into the weekend we will be celebrating a special day and as I sitting reminiscing I also remembered the food and drink that went along with our day and it only felt natural to write this post which will include quotes from my travel diary… I just hope I do the day justice

It was a truly magical day but I am aware I want to be writing about the food and drink rather than the actual wedding.

For both of us, but separately, it all began with a glass of chilled Cava in the beautiful Fijian sun as the afternoon drew to an end just before out sunset ceremony. Both to celebrate our forthcoming marriage as well as perhaps settle some nerves. “I was a nervous wreck, the Cava arrived and that helped”.

One of our wedding preparations was to make sure they had enough sparkling wine in stock for us!

After the ceremony it is a Fiji traditional to hold a Kava Ceremony (this often accompanies important religious, political or social events). The minister, us, our witnesses (now life long friends) and hotel staff all sat in a circle and clapped as the Kava was drunk from a coconut shell and passed around. Your choice whether you had ‘high tide’ (full) or ‘low tide’. My hubstar as the groom was the second most important person there after the minister and got to drink second. “This was a lovely touch, and luckily the more you try Kava the better it gets, after this we went to the outside of our Bure to celebrate with more Cava before dinner”.

For those who don’t know Kava is consumed throughout the South Pacific Islands and is the sun-dried root of the Kava plant which is pound into a fine powder, strained and mixed with water. It doesn’t have a particularly nice flavour but has an anesthetic effect, numbing the tongue which hides the flavour! Kava or grog is very popular in Fiji and you often see men sitting around socialising while drinking this crushed root.

For dinner the hotel had specially put on a roast meal option in celebration of our wedding, however I just went for the lobster soup after all the happy emotions of the day I found I didn’t have much of an appetite. The rest of the evening we spent celebrating and drinking Cava under the stars of the warm Fiji skies. “Because of all the excitement I only managed some soup. Hubstar had pâté then a prawn dish. After this we went back to outside our Bure and drank more Cava”

We may not be in Fiji this weekend but hopefully some Champagne will be drunk.

The final word has to be to my lovely hubstar and here’s to many more happy years!
