italian food week

Hotel Mirandola Having just got back from a snow holiday at Passo Tonale in Italy I thought it only right to share the dinner menu from my fantastic week. My hubstar, brother and I stayed in piste-side accommodation,
the Hotel La Mirandola, renowned for its food, decor and location; and the restaurant was just beautiful.

Every night our meal began with a salad bar, now I’m not talking just the usual lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes etc but pastries, cold veg, pickles and even cold meats. It was almost enough to fill me up but the men just piled their plates up high. Lucky it was an activity holiday to get us an appetite!

So here’s my week’s evening meal:

Day 1. we arrived after dinner service had finished
Polenta with Wild Mushrooms – never tried polenta before, it was nice but similar to rice I wouldn’t want too much of it
Breaded fish with baby carrots – carrots were over cooked but I suspect it had been kept warm for our late arrival
Tiramisu – delicious!

Day 2.
Felliacino with game (typical local dish)
Carpaccio loin with apple and cheese (typical local dish) – actually cured pork
Creme caramel

Day 3.
Wheat cereal with Italian sausage (typical local dish)
Lard and honey (typical local dish) – we didn’t actually expect to be lard; perhaps a translation issue but is was fat (probably from the cured pork the night before) – definitely a meal we will aways remember!
Fresh fruit

Day 4.
Strangolapreti with butter and sage – spinach gnocchi
Fillet of trout with mountain spices
Too full for dessert
*This evening hubstar had the typical local dish carpaccio of beef the menu described as corned beef – bro and I were very jealous!

Day 5.
Wild mushroom crepe
Cheese tart with shredded cabbage (typical local dish)
Italian strawberry ice cream – yummy!

Day 6. Typical local Italian cuisine night
Assorted local meat
Risotto in Teroldego red wine with apples
Pumpkin soup with cream
Oven baked leg of pork with potatoes, onions and bacon
Cottage cheese flan with hot vanilla cream heart

Day 7.
Replaced with Aprés Ski!

Mirandola Restaurant

I’m leaving the wine for another time…

We had a fantastic ski holiday, the hospital at Hotel Mirandola was excellent and for the second year running we booked through Neilson Snow Holidays who I can not recommend more highly from the booking process to our reps’ (Rhianna and Dan) in-resort hospitality, on-piste guiding and resort transfers. Yes that is a little plug as after some bad experiences I like to praise the good; so thank you!
