my christmas dinner

Christmas Dinner Having shared my Christmas Goose recipe with you yesterday I think it’s only right to share my complete Christmas day food experience; a special breakfast, seafood starter, the all important roast main course, evening snacks as well as cheese and biscuits…

However I do have a little problem. I was so excited about eating my meal I completely forgot to take any photos! After the starter I was annoyed I only remembered to take a photo after we had cleared our plates and then did exactly the same for the main course – Doh! Hence the delay in writing this as the photos on this post are from our meal made up of left-overs, which was almost a complete replica of Christmas Day as I did cook too much!

Breakfast. On Christmas Day we always treat ourselves to some Smoked Salmon, but this year we actually had Gravlax with Croissants, washed down with Bucks Fizz which also accompanied the present opening.

Welcome aperitif. We welcomed our guests with a chilled glass of Champagne, Monopole blue top – my favourite!

Starter. Half an Avocado topped with Prawns in a homemade Marie Rose Sauce, rolled Smoked Salmon cut into segments with a wedge of Lemon and a warm granary roll with ‘real butter’.

Main Course. It was all delicious (even if I say so myself) and accompanied with a bottle of Champagne, well it would have been rude not too. Our Day-Ahead Goose was served with:

  • Roast potatoes par-boiled in turmeric to give them a real golden colour
  • Pigs in blankets cooked with red wine
  • Sweet potatoes & parsnips roasted together with a sprinkle of paprika
  • Swede & carrot mashed with ‘real butter’, crème fraîche, seasoning, nutmeg, breadcrumbs
  • Sprouts, par-boiled then stir-fried in ground nut oil
  • Yorkshire puddings (a must with any roast meal)
  • Chestnut stuffing as well as Sage & Onion stuffing – both made by my mum
  • Christmas gravy which included any stock from cooking the goose as well as its liquidised internal organs
  • Homemade Grape & Apple jelly – made by my mother-in-law

Christmas dinner

Dessert. No dessert for us as we were all so full from the starter and main. I knew that was likely to be the case and we would all chose a starter over a dessert.

Evening snack. While playing a Christmas Day board game of Risk we happily munched through a tub of Twiglets. I guess they are the sort of thing you either love or hate. They are so more-ish and not because of the food additive MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Cheese & Biscuits. Probably my favourite dessert and luckily the rest of my family love it too. I had left the cheese out to soften for a few hours, Smoked Applewood Cheddar, Stilton, Cambozola, White Stilton with Apricots, Jarlesberg and Blue Shropshire. We enjoyed it with a few glasses of port, buttered biscuits and my mother-in-law’s Grape & Apple jelly.

I had one of the best Christmas Days I can remember and would like to thank my family for making it so special.
