the kenilworth experience

KenilworthFabulous Kenilworth

The final part of the IndigoDaisies tour was Kenilworth a really beautiful town we visit frequently to see some close friends and our God Daughter. This visit included a great hotel, 2 good but different evening meals, brilliant breakfast and the stunning castle.

For the second time we stayed at Milsoms Hotel which is in the beautiful old part of Kenilworth dating back to the 1500s, and connected to the Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant. The hotel is full of character, the staff are friendly and the rooms very comfortable –  what more can you ask for? The breakfast, which is included, is in the Loch Fyne Restaurant where you can choose from 4/5 hot options as well as opt for a selection of cereals and yoghurt or indeed both! Coffee, tea and juice is free-flowing. Both mornings I chose the full English – good quality bacon and sausage plus perfect poached eggs.

Kenilworth tour

Our first night we ate at the Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant which we wanted to do on our last visit but ran out of time. The restaurant is a really welcoming and happy environment. The chef’s can be seen cooking in their open-plan style kitchen within the restaurant and the fish is presented nicely on ice in a dedicated display fridge. It was also refreshing to have some excellent service, our waiter “Sam” was attentive but not over the top. To drink we enjoyed a Domaine des Dorices Muscadet from Loire Valley, France – a crisp dry wine which went wonderfully with the fish. To start I had Loch Fyne rope-grown mussels steamed with chilli coriander oil, which were tasty but if I’m honest I have had better locally. For main pan-fried fillet of Loch Duart salmon with citrus couscous and chilli dressing now that was amazing.

At Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant our starters included 1 x Three Loch Fyne oysters on ice, 1 x South Coast sardines pan-fried with tomatoes, garlic and parsley, 1 x Roasted red pepper and tomato soup, 2x Loch Fyne rope-grown mussels steamed with chilli coriander oil. For main course: 1 x Whole grilled South Coast plaice with parsley butter, 1 x Gloucester Old Spot pork sausages on mash with red onion gravy, 3 x pan-fried fillet of Loch Duart salmon with citrus couscous and chilli dressing.

The second night we ate at Ego Restaurant which was a completely different restaurant but still a really good night. To start our lovely friends spoilt us with a bottle of sparkling, Alfons Cava from Pènedes, Spain – yummy! Ego were running a special offer which we all questioned as it seemed unbelievable – 2 courses for £18.50 with a free bottle of wine – yes that’s right a whole normal sized bottle of wine each! You could upgrade your wine from the standard house to a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc for £2, so that is what we did. Needless to say this meal was very “liquid” although I would like to point out that we took 2 of the bottles away with us. So to start I had Grilled Goats Cheese on brioche with caramelised onions and fig & pineapple chutney (the goats cheese could have been cooked slightly more I felt); for main Pepperoni Piccante pizza with pepperoni, mozzarella and red chillies, a fabulously delicious pizza. Our meal was obviously in a different league from the Loch Fyne Restaurant but still very enjoyable, a fab night and couple of great days with good friends and our beautiful God Daughter.

At Ego Restaurant our starters included 2 x Grilled Goats Cheese on brioche with caramelised onions and fig & pineapple chutney, 2 x Chorizo Frito al Vino with garlic, herbs, grilled ciabatta and 1 x Gambas al Pil Pil with garlic, chilli, tomato rubbed bread. For main: 2 x Steak Frites – 8oz sirloin, confit tomato, skin-on fries, peppercorn, shallot or dolcelatte sauce, 1 x Pepperoni Piccante pizza, 2 x Chicken Forestière – wild mushroom, leek & red wine cream sauce, mange tout.

The other place worth stopping for a local real ale or quality glass of wine is just opposite the Milsoms Hotel and called Virgins and Castle, one of the oldest pubs in Warwickshire and just lovely.

Before Kenilworth we were in Coventry which has got to be a mecca for Indian Restaurants and I just wanted to mention we had a fab curry at Bombay Joes.
