Saturday night I spent a lovely evening with my husband and some fabulous friends at one of my favourite local bistro restaurants. Not only is the food great but the whole atmosphere and decor is perfect as well as being set in a great position overlooking the coast and out to sea.
Aperitif. The night started with a drink outside on the patio, gin and tonic for some and for others a glass of perfectly chilled Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. A fab way to sit and muse over the menu and specials.
To start. I chose the Cheese & Chive Souffle which was served with a dressed salad garnish. A dish I’ve always admired on other visits, it did not disappoint, plus it was just the perfect amount.
Main course. Myself and friend chose from the specials, Red Mullet Deep-Fried in Tempura Batter, served with french fries and salad garnish. If I’m completely honest I was a little disappointed with this. I expect a tempura batter to be light and thin. For me (and friend) we found the batter too thick, the taste was lovely but just too much of it and we left alot on the plate. The fish inside however was cooked to perfection and just melted in your mouth.
For dessert. Personally I didn’t have a dessert however a couple did indulge; Hockings Ice Cream in a Brandy Snap Basket and a Creme Brulee. I have to say I still did well as the Creme Brulee came with a small brandy snap basket of summer berries – just up my street so I managed to polish that off – just to help out of course!
To finish. We all indulged in a liqueur coffee. A Highland Coffee for me which finished the meal perfectly.
Although my main course was not totally as I would have wanted I still had a fab night and would recommend this restaurant. The attention to detail is well thought out, with meal accompaniments varying to complement each individual dish; from chunky chips and french fries, mashed and new potatoes to vegetables and salads. All prepared and cooked freshly. The chef also makes his own sausages which are just divine. Every variety I have tried are just delicious but my favourite has to be the spicy chorizo sausage. This must be one of the few restaurants I would recommend having “bangers and mash”!
