highlights of the flourescent hens

Skate, prawns, salad, chips, peasWell over the weekend I went on a flourescent hen party. Now don’t worry I’m not going to be writing about the whole hen experience but just a couple of food and drink highlights.

The day started with a meal at a popular local restaurant with amazing views and a good atmosphere. We were lucky enough to take over the whole restaurant. 3 of us shared a couple of starters, my favourite of which was the garlic crusted brie wedges – yum! Then for my main I had skate wing cooked with prawns and lemon butter, served with chips and peas. The fish was presented beautifully and tasted just as good. Skate, as I have already said in a previous post, is one my favourite fish, I love the meaty texture and you can just scrape the fish off the wing so you don’t even have to worry about bones. So I was very pleased with my choice of food.

So as much as I had a lovely meal there were still some negatives which is a real shame as it can change your whole opinion of a restaurant once you notice them. I like fresh food, now the menu  was so big you weren’t so much spoilt for choice but wondered how a chef could prepare all the different dishes from scratch. It was also very obvious that a variety of the dishes were probably just bought in from a frozen food company, which backs up previous point. The veg on offer was just peas… emphasising previous points. And again the chilled chips scenario, to be honest I don’t know the answer to this, they are better than frozen chips but still nothing special.

Bollinger ChampagneNow as you’ve probably noticed by the picture to the left the next part I want to share with you is the champagne. Oh yes the champagne! Now I am a champagne kind of girl, you can tell the difference between cava and champagne the smell, the taste. Now I’ve only tried Bollinger once before and to be honest it wasn’t the best bubbles I’d ever tasted or one of my favourites. However this bottle was completely different. I was in love just with the smell and I savoured every mouthful! Oh and thank you to a certain someone who gave me their glass.

So now I had better finish cooking tonight’s dinners, roast beef with all the trimmings….
