10 most hated or just not eaten properly?

Broccoli, Tomato, Sprouts, Mushrooms

I stumbled across an article earlier online titled “Top 10 most hated food” realbuzz.com/articles/top-10-most-hated-foods

Which got me thinking, are they really the most hated food or just that people don’t know how to cook them properly? So here are my thoughts…

Mushrooms
Personally I love mushrooms, I can happily munch away on them as I am supposed to be preparing them for a meal. However you have to eat them fresh, store for too long or in the wrong sort of container then this won’t do them any good. It’s true you should store them in a paper bag.

Celery
Again I don’t have a problem with celery, it’s not the most tasty food and I can understand it can get stringy and then stuck between your teeth but it’s great for sauces and soups. But is it true you burn more calories from eating it than you actual consume?

Brussel Sprouts
I’m sorry this is something I do share a hate of and perhaps it is from my childhood. I always remember being told I had to eat one until I was old enough to flatly refuse. Funnily enough each year my brother and I both eat just 1 Christmas sprout!

Fish
I enjoy nearly all fish, my favourite is mackerel but it must be fresh,  just caught, another one is skate (but I don’t like it with capers). I know a lot of people struggle with seeing the heads and/or the bones. If this is the case perhaps try just sticking with fillets. Fish is so good for you and the tastes and textures vary so if you don’t like a certain type just try something different.

Marmite
Love, love, love marmite. I don’t think there is anything else to say. Mmmmm Marmite!

Tomatoes
Now I do have an slight issue here, how many times have you bought tomatoes at a supermarket and they just taste of nothing? If that’s the case it is no wonder people don’t like them. Grow your own or buy English toms from your local fruit and veg man and I bet you’ll notice a difference. I have a pet hate – I don’t like the stalk in a tomato and I always cut it out. I also think you can tell if a chef really knows what he’s doing if he cuts the stalk out of tomatoes – check this out next time you eat out!

Broccoli
I may not like sprouts but I don’t have a problem at all with broccoli, I believe most people probably have issues with this because they have it over cooked. Personally I think the best way to cook broccoli is to steam it gently for a couple of minutes – give it a try!

Tofu
Ashamedly I don’t have any experience with tofu so perhaps this is something I should experiment with, so if you have any suggestions please email them to me.

Avocados
Again no problem with avocados, these are delicious a lovely creamy taste I think. Complements a salad perfectly, or just on its own or with tasty tomatoes. And don’t forget guacamole, how can you have nachos without it? I can’t get enough of these fruits.

Peanut butter
Love, love, love peanut butter too but has to be the crunchy variety! Now I’m wondering if you automatically love marmite do you love peanut butter? What do you guys think?

Would be great to have everyone’s thoughts on this!

  1. Mmm, this is making me hungry! Like you, I love most of these foods. Although your approach to brussel sprouts reminds me of my brother – he does exactly the same at Christmas; has just one! I actually like them – try them fried in butter and cinnamon. So good! And celery works really well in soup, like you say. I have to admit I’m a bit of a tomato hater- I love them cooked but really can’t stand them raw (and the stronger the taste, the more I hate them).

I’m also not a massive fruit fan, so avocados aren’t something I’d seek out – not sure I’ve ever had one? I’m not too keen on tofu either – Dan uses it as a meat substitute (he’s veggie), but tends to prefer nuts/ things which taste better! I just see it as a rubbish reason to not eat meat. I’ll see if he has used it any time where it’s work and, if so, send you the recipe…

Final thought on Marmite/ peanut butter – I love Marmite too. But I hate peanut butter. Dan loves peanut butter and hates Marmite. Which results in a lot of extra knifes to wash up when making toast… Although I will admit that I did like the peanut butter cookies I made a few months ago!

Sorry, that was a long comment – was interested to see the most hated foods though! And for the record, I think fish (pretty much any kind) might be my most loved food…

    • Hey Anna I agree with you completely with your reasoning on tofu but I can’t completely comment without trying it myself but I won’t be rushing out to buy it instead of a fillet steak.
And I guess from your comment and rudd79 above it’s a definite no to my question. If you like Marmite it doesn’t mean you love peanut butter. Worth an ask though…
