You know what it’s like you really don’t want to buy your fruit and veg from the supermarket; you don’t know whether it’s fresh, from the UK (let alone local), good value for money or sometimes even what you want… but when you both work full-time it’s convenient and available… and very often disappointing and tasteless!
You try to use the local green grocer but it’s not always easy to carry to the car, they’re open ridiculously early in the morning but closed by the time you leave work at 5.30pm and actually know what you want for dinner (as is the local butcher!).
So what is the solution? I have tried a couple of online fruit and veg delivery services and I have to say localfarmbox.co.uk is the best I’ve tried so far, there veg is just delicious. They cover most of Devon, into North Cornwall and Somerset. It’s not necessary organic but as much as can be is local. So I feel good that I’m supporting my local farms.
The delivery is awesome, unlike some companies each area doesn’t have a specific delivery day as long as you order before 12 noon it comes the very next day (after noon the day after next). If you’re not going to be in, no problem leave instructions where to leave it. Each delivery comes in a reusable box, leave out for collection next time you get a delivery – so you’re even helping out by using less packaging.
So I hear you say, how much is this fantastic service. Well I think it’s amazing value and I don’t think a supermarket can beat it. You have a selection of boxes to choose from, today I took delivery of an £11.50 Mix Veg Box which included (are you ready…) 3kg of potatoes, 4 jacket potatoes, swede, cauliflower, carrot bunch, beetroot bunch, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, flat lettuce, vine tomatoes, cabbage and leeks. Now that really can’t be bad!
On top of that you can order extra salad and dairy items which as far as I can see are priced at supermarket prices. Today I got bananas, apples and more vine tomatoes. Oh and they also sell local meat. I think it’s just an amazing service.
In case you can’t tell I’m really excited about this company. I look forward to seeing what’s in my box (even though I know what I have ordered), I feel like I am helping local farms, I LOVE THE TASTE OF THE VEG, and when I get something unusual its great thinking of what to cook with it… Beetroot recipes please!
